   ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) - Plugging the gaping hole at defensive tackle has proven to be the Denver Broncos' biggest bugaboo.The draft was deep in run-stuffers but the Broncos bypassed them all, choosing instead to select the best pass-rusher in Von Miller with the second overall pick and electing to pick up a few more beefy bodies in free agency.Their wallets weren't thick enough to lure the marquee names in the frenzied days after the lockout ended. But they liked their luck when Ty Warren was cut by New England.The Broncos made the former Patriots star interior lineman the centerpiece of their free agent class by signing him to a two-year, $8 million deal that included a $2.5 million bonus and $1.5 million salary for 2011.They also re-signed their own free agent defensive tackle, Marcus Thomas, at $1 million for one year.Both were injured within five minutes of each other when they lined up with the first-team defense during a 9-on-7 drill Monday.Thomas (strained pectoral) and Warren (torn triceps) won't be back on the field anytime soon.Thomas' chest muscle wasn't completely torn off the bone like Elvis Dumervil's was when he suffered a season-ending injury early in last summer's training camp. So, the Broncos are hoping he'll be ready to play by the time their season starts Sept. 12.Warren is out indefinitely. The Broncos are hoping he won't need surgery and can return to the field at some point this season, although that would mean going with a 52-man roster for a while."Well, injuries are part of the deal, especially in camp," coach John Fox said. "We have a next-man-up philosophy, so Bunk (Brodrick Bunkley) and Kevin Vickerson, they'll get an opportunity, along with some others, and we'll just take it day to day."Thomas was starting in both the base and nickel defenses and Warren was the Broncos' biggest, most accomplished defensive tackle in the rotation."Those are two vital pieces that were going to be a part of this defense," Vickerson said. "We can't think about it. We've just got to keep on keeping on, and the next guy has got to be ready. That's why you can't have any weaknesses in your depth chart and you can't have anybody getting lax."Warren, 30, missed all of last season with a hip injury and a surgery to repair his torn triceps could threaten not only his season but his career.Warren was especially excited for the Broncos' preseason opener at Dallas last week."I knew he was fired up and showed a lot of emotion because he got back on the field after a year off," Vickerson said. "I know it's kind of messing with him a little bit just because he's going through an injury like this, but hopefully it's not a season-ending injury and he can come back soon."In other news, the Broncos released running back LenDale White. The former USC star never had the chance to play for his hometown team. He suffered a torn Achilles tendon in the final preseason game last year and missed the entire season.He ran for 10 yards on four carries in the Broncos' preseason opener but hadn't been on the practice field enough to compete for a roster spot."It's just a tough injury for any NFL player to overcome, especially at running back, through a lockout. We couldn't supervise anything," general manager Brian Xanders said.White's chances were also hurt when back spasms sidelined him for several days early in camp."We want all of our guys to compete 100 percent during practice," Xanders said.Likely factoring into the move was the impressive play of Jeremiah Johnson, a second-year pro from Oregon who looks to be in line to back up Knowshon Moreno and Willis McGahee in the Broncos backfield.Notes: The Broncos claimed LB Alvin Bowen and released LB A.J.  TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - As a veteran cornerback thrust onto a new team after the start of the preseason, Ashton Youboty needs to make something happen fast.Or not. It helps that he already knows the Buccaneers' defense pretty well."There's no urgency," Youboty said Tuesday after intercepting a pass in his second day of practice with the Bucs. "I think It's more about responsibility and knowing what you're trying to do, where they need you and playing within the scheme of a defense."Football is like chess. They teach you about the pieces and you know where they've got to be. They just do their jobs and the guys who make plays turn into rooks, pawns or whatever."The 27-year-old Youboty signed a two-year contract with Tampa Bay on Monday. He played his first five seasons with the Buffalo Bills, most of it using the Tampa-2 defense with which he is now reunited."Even going back to college (at Ohio State), I've just tried to be an aggressive corner. So I'm familiar with all of this, the footwork . . . we ran the same things, but there are some unique differences in where they want their players to be."Nothing has been said to Youboty about what his role will be with the Bucs, or whether he will play in Thursday night's preseason game against the New England Patriots."Really we just want to see him go out there and compete, and then we'll put him into his role if he can find himself one," said coach Raheem Morris.The Bucs are big believers in depth at cornerback, but there are some questions. The starters are 15-year veteran Ronde Barber and Aqib Talib, who missed the last five games of 2010 with a hip injury. Young backups Myron Lewis and E.J. Biggers are virtually certain to make the team."When we're talking about corners, we're looking for guys that can go out there and play man-to-man and bump," Morris said. "(Youboty) has been one of those guys in his career, and when they get here we teach those guys about situational football and what they can do for us."Even when he was drafted in the third round back in 2006, Youboty said the Bucs were one of the teams showing the most interest in him. Now he is trying to make the team."They've seen tape on me, but I still have to prove it here so they can see it with their own eyes," he said. "I'm trying to show them I know where to be within the scheme. When the plays come, they'll come. You can't rush it. I can't tell the quarterback to throw it to me. I've tried, but they don't listen."Tuesday was the official end of training camp for the Bucs, who will get three straight non-practice days after Thursday night's gameAsked for his assessment of camp, Morris said: "I think the assessment was the other night when those guys came out playing fast, playing smart, playing hard and playing consistent (in a 25-0 exhibition victory at Kansas City). On the play, fellow safety Patrick Chung was closest in coverage, but it was Meriweather who got the hook.Add in the Patriots making an offer to free-agent safety Dashon Goldson last week before Goldson decided to re-sign with the 49ers, and Meriweather -- a 2007 first-round draft choice -- finds himself on shaky ground. Or, at the least, the coaches are attempting to light a fire under him.When asked about Meriweather on Monday, Patriots director of player personnel Nick Caserio touched on his production and experience in the team's system. He called him a talented player.But just as defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth talked about leaving things in the past upon his arrival to New England, what matters now for Meriweather is not what happened between 2007 and 2010, but instead, how he fits into this year's defense. And that fit is in question."Is it perfect? No. Is he working hard to get better? That's the most important thing," Caserio said, not answering his own question and perhaps providing a hint to what is irking the team when it comes to Meriweather."I think the biggest thing is each year is kind of its own entity, so the most important thing is you're just looking for improvement over the course of time. Showing an ability to work alongside another safety as a duo also is key, and Meriweather has admitted in the past to freelancing. The trickle-down effect is that it can negatively affect the safety lining up next to him; in this case, Chung.Chung directed all personnel questions to coach Bill Belichick on Monday, saying it wasn't his place to talk about the different combinations at safety in practice. But when it came to the importance of communication among safeties, who serve as the last line of defense, he was happy to expound.There have been times in training camp where the communication hasn't been up to the level it needs to be and the Tom Brady-led offense has carved up the secondary."You can never have too good commnuication, it has to be perfect, 'boom, boom, boom!' so you can play instinctely and play fast. That's your right-hand man, period. You have to communicate with just pointing, just eyes," Chung said, adding that the best way to develop that with a fellow safety is "being next to him every play, in practice, and even in the meeting room."Entering this training camp, a Chung-Meriweather pairing seemed like it could be a strength. They are highly touted players who were selected with the team's top pick two years apart from each other. But the picture looks different now, and if things don't turn around quickly, one wonders how much longer Meriweather will be in it.

"As far as the position, the defensive line, you have healthy competition. We were expecting big things from Mike as a contributor this year.
